Most Surfers, Windsurfers, Snowboarders, Kitesurfers, Skiers and Skateboarders will already know the heritage of the Dakine brand. The company has been manufacturing functional performance equipment, bags and apparel since its conception in Hawaii in 1979. They began problem solving in the companies infancy, initially redesigning the surf leash to produce a stronger, more dependable connection between rider and board, then they turned their problem solving skills to surf bags and luggage to produce some of the most practical and durable surf bags, quickly establishing themselves as the industry standard for toughness, construction quality and value. Their reputation grew and their range slowly expanded.
In 1980 Dakine introduced the first ever windsurfing adjustable footstrap and in 82, the first windsurfing waist harness, with these two innovations playing a vital part in the sport’s rapid progression through early 80’s. In 86 Dakine built their first snowboard Heli-Pack as a solution to the problem of how to carry snowboarder’s essentials kit on trips into the back-country while still retaining the ability to move fluidly and naturally when riding.
They later applied the knowledge and experience gained in producing the innovative Heli-Pack to the production of packs for mountain bikers who faced similar issues in carrying hydration, tools and essential spares and from 2005 began delivering a range of tough lightweight stripped back packs designed to carry and organise trail essential with minimal intrusion on movement.
Their range has grown from their initially offering of dependable MTB packs/bags, expanding into offering apparel, protection and accessories for mountain biking. With each new item remaining true to their vision to offer tough reliable kit that is excellent value.
Why we love Dakine
The first thing most people who’ve owned anything Dakine will talk about is the build quality. This stuff is built to last. We’ve had heli packs that have survived years of abuse, way exceeding our expectations, likewise surfboard and bike bags. The construction and materiel quality you get for the price is impressive and packs are well equipped with organisational features like hydration reservoir sleeve (Hydropak reservoir includes), tool pockets and dividers.
The brand’s distinct heritage also shows through in their unique styling so if you are looking for something that’s a departure from the many motocross influenced brands on the market today, Dakine has some unique garments that look great and are extremely well made at very approachable prices. Particularly here on the West Coast where mountains collide with the ocean, the Surf influence should appeal to west coast trail riders and mountain explorers alike.
We love that the brand designs equally for women and men and you’ll find both women’s and men’s packs, jerseys, shorts and gloves in stock now at Summit Cycles in a range of sizes and styles.
