In the first of our new series of updated staff profiles we meet Siôn our head tech and chief trail hammerhead.
What got you into cycling?
I started riding super young, apparently I was quite a handful to catch on a balance bike… Clearly though just attempting to beat my last time from the living room to the kitchen. I took notice of riding skilfully at the age of approx 4 (26 years ago now) when parents would set trials courses for me around the outside of the house using raised scaffold planks stacked on paint tins. With some balance honed, trials riding became a way of thinking and my mind was hooked on all things two wheeled.
What inspires you to ride?
A definite inspiration to ride and progress was a series of off the scale loose films called New World Disorder. If you haven’t seen them, you should. Riders pioneering and blurring the lines of what was possible on a bike opened my mind. My favourite rider by a country mile was Wade Simmons. A real legend in the sport and possibly the most calculated guy ever to saddle up.
Best trail for me locally has to be Star Wars trail near the Dyfi, another has to be Fifty Shades of Black near ish by at Bike Park Wales. That trail full throttle is both such a buzz and scary! Abroad, I had such a fun time riding the near on perfect trails at Les Lindarets, the setting, the goat village and the empty flowing trails were top dollar.
Bucket list trail?
Having been to the Alps where it can get busy with riders, I’ve always wanted to experience big mountain riding in far away lands. It would have to be back country British Columbia, rural Scandinavia or the Himalayas.
Bike: My favourite bike to date, DMR Sidekick custom build. Back then, I was young (er), fearless and care free. I had some life memorable sunset sessions with riding pals at the dirt spot on that bike with some of my best riding to date. A close second has to be the Santa Cruz Nomad Mk3. What a bike! The Nomad, for me opened up a world of bigger hucks, bucks and flowing trails. Fun times.
Food: Ideally a fully loaded veggie pizza, pitta or flat bread. Drink: Gin guzzling, beer sipping, I’m a nature loving, minimalist living, Welsh speaking West Wallian.
You’ll find me in the workshop where I enjoy repairing your bikes and listening to your riding stories.
Best & worst thing about working in the cycle industry?
One of the best things about working in the cycling industry is being an integral part of our thriving bike community and getting to know like minded people. The worst… It has to be cleaning and repairing badly neglected filthy bikes, I call it bike cruelty. Keep it clean and always ride hard!
