New Active Travel Map for Aberystwyth, Public Bike Repair Stations & Cycle Wheel Ramp
Active Travel Map
Ceredigion Council have been busy worked in partnership with Sustrans to produce a new Active Travel map for Aberystwyth which highlights routes and also new facilities recently installed in the Town. The paper map is available at Canolfan Rheidol, Aberystwyth Town Library, Plascrug Leisure Centre, National Library of Wales, Rail Station Ticket Office and all the bike shops in Town with a pdf version on the Council’s Active Travel webpage: http://www.ceredigion.gov.uk/media/4721/active-travel-map-for-aberystwyth.pdf
The map also shows cycle parking facilities in Town and new infrastructure such as Public Bike Repair Stations with Tyre Pumps. There are now 4 of these around Town located as follows:
- Next to the new cycle shelter near the Rail Station at the back of Matalan
- Outside Plascrug Leisure Centre
- Next to the Porters Lodge at the entrance to Aber University
- Near the entrance to Parc Kronberg Skate park where recent improved to the cycle path have been made.
There is also a stand-alone tyre pump stand next to the cycle parking rack on Baker Street just up from NatWest Bank.

Ceredigion is probably the first Authority in Wales to install these stations that provide a wonderful resource to support the local cycle community.
Cycle Transport Ramp
Earlier this week a new cycle wheel ramp was installed on the steps below the National Library of Wales which is a popular link to the University and Sports Centre – cyclists can now put their bike tyres in the channel and simply push their bikes up and down these steps without having to carry them.
We at Summit Cycles are extremely pleased to see our local council working hard to support cycle transport here in Aberystwyth. The new map and facilities provide even more good reasons for local people to swap car journeys for bike journeys. They also furthers Aberystwyth’s credentials as a cycle-friendly destination which has to be great news for local tourism.
And, even more good news!!!
We just received this from Gari Jones, Active Travel Officer…
New Active Travel Routes on the way
I’m very pleased to announce that work will start in January 2019 to construct a new shared use path, for cyclists and pedestrians, between Bow Street and IBERS in Plas Gogerddan and the construction work will be undertaken by a local contractor. We have worked with Aberystwyth University to acquire land to accommodate this new path and partnership work is ongoing with a view to continuing the shared use path link towards Penrhyncoch in the following financial year. This will help link the communities of Penrhyncoch and Bow Street and will also tie in with the construction of the Bow Street Rail Station and Transport Interchange which is due to commence next year. Environmental & Ecology aspects will be included in this scheme such as tree replanting, log piles to create wildlife habitats and an otter ledge will be installed under the carriageway bridge to help safeguard the local wildlife.
Construction work will also commence in January to widen the existing footway between Pont y Cleifion Roundabout and Parc Teifi Business Park in Cardigan, so that this will be shared use standard for cyclists alongside pedestrians. These schemes will help provide increased opportunities for people to make car free journeys and are thanks to securing grant funding from the Welsh Government.
Details of proposed Active Travel schemes along with Annual Reports detailing improvements already implemented can be found on the Active Travel webpage: http://www.ceredigion.gov.uk/resident/travel-roads-parking/active-travel/

What are Gravel Bikes (and why we love them) Simply put, a gravel bike is a kind of hybrid between road and cyclocross bike that is built tough enough to tackle gravel tracks, forest fire roads and a little light dirt yet remain light and efficient enough to still make swift progress on tarmac road. […]
