Local Bike Shop Day - Saturday April 29th 2023

Come and join us on Saturday 29th of April when we will be celebrating Local Bike Shop Day.

As members of the Association of Cycle Traders we are part of a UK wide community of quality local bike shops dedicated to offering the very best service and support to our local cycling community.

Buying a bike from a local bike shop means you have local advice, support and technical backup to keep you rolling with a smile. We are all cyclists too and only sell good quality bike gear that we ourselves use and trust. It's just one of the ways we share our love of cycling with every one of our customers.

On April 29th, Summit Cycles will be joining hundreds of other ACT members across the UK to celebrate the role of the local bike shop. In store we'll have plenty going on. Our staff will be on hand offering advice and tips on bike care, where to ride and the best gear to choose to make the most of your riding. We'll have free bike health checks and a range of demo ebikes available so you can try one for yourself. There will also be special offers and promotions running in store.

Free bike health checks

There’s no need to book but if it’s busy we will have a queuing system will be in operation so there may be a little wait or you may be asked to pop back a little later with your bike. All you need to do is show up on the day with your bike and one of our CYTEC qualified cycle technicians will inspect your bike.

This will involve making a visual inspection plus some basic function checks of essential components, steering braking, wheel hubs, gears and tyres. It’s essentially a safety check but will also highlight any service work that might need urgent attention or things that may be advisable to look into soon. In our experience a little bit of early preventative work can save you a lot of money in the long run. After inspection, our technician will be able to advise on the general condition of your bike and will give feedback on the safety of your cycle and suggest if further work is advisable. The check gives you a better idea of the condition of your bike and what work might be needed, you are under no obligation to book the work with us but we will be happy to make a booking if you wish.

We won’t be carrying out any service work on the day, just the checks but our technicians may choose to make a few simple adjustments to your bike if required and if these are simple to do. If we do this, there will be no charge for this work or if a charge would be required you will be consulted beforehand.

In most cases, after the check we will be able to quote for any work needed and make a booking for the work to be carried out on a convenient date should you wish.

Our workshop gets extremely busy at this time of year so we are unfortunately unable to hang onto bikes until the service date, you will need to take them away and bring them back when your bike is due its service appointment.

10% off components fitted on service work booked on LBS day

If you do book service work on LBS day we’re offering 10% off the price of any parts fitted as part of that work. That means 10% off anything like brake pads, chains, cassettes, tyres or tubes that you need fitted as part of the work.

Try an ebike

Have you tried an ebike yet? Want to know what all the fuss is about? Would an ebike be for you? Maybe you are considering purchasing an ebike or looking to upgrade to a newer model. On LBS day we want to help answer all your ebike questions. Our ebike experts will be on hand to answer ebike questions and we will have a number of demonstration models available to try free of charge on the day.

There will be a number of bikes available to try on the day covering a range of styles from recreational bikes to electric mountain bikes. Demo period will be fairly short to make sure everyone gets the chance to try a bike. We have a short road ebike test route that we suggest as a great route to follow to get an idea of how the bike performs and what it can offer. The route takes you from the shop, past the library and up to the Golf Club where you can turn around and head back the same way.

For those who are not super confident on a bike we suggest walking the bike over the road to begin with, or walk the bike carefully on the pavement to use the crossing by the Spar corner shop. This will allow you to walk the bike past the busy one way section outside the shop. On your return we would also advise dismounting by the Spar shop and crossing back the same way walking the bike on foot. Please don’t ride the bike on the pavement.

To demo, you will need:

Current official photo identification. This must be either a government issued photocard drivers licence or passport. A bike helmet – Please bring your own bike helmet. If you don’t have one then we can arrange a loan helmet but you will need to contact us before the day to arrange this. Alternatively, there will be some 50% off helmet deals on the day. Why not buy one and bag a bargain!!

The demo route is available here, if you have a smartphone with Google maps you can use it to navigate the route. Alternatively we will be able to print maps if needed on the day.

On LBS Day anyone who makes a purchase in store will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win a £150 Summit Cycles voucher*. The prize will be drawn at random from the day's customers and any purchase, whatever value will make you eligible for the draw. So if you need to grab a spare tube or just a handy energy bar snack, this is the day to do it as any purchase gets you in with a chance of winning. It's good odds!

*(No cash alternative available, prize will be drawn and announced in the first week of May you will need to have contact details on our system in order for us to be able to notify you).

Meet our team

This year Summit Cycles will celebrate 25 years of serving the local cycle community. My how the time has flown! It would seem inexcusable to let the occasion pass without a suitable celebration so we will be announce soon news of our plans to mark our 25th birthday. For now though, LBS day offers a great chance to celebrate our local cycle scene so why not come and say hi, catch up and talk bike with the Summit Cycles team.

LBS day

LBS day is about celebrating all that’s great about local bike shops. It’s as much about the customers as the crew. Some of you we’ve know for years, many who we sold their first bike to have gone on to be as nuts about bikes as we all are (in some cases possibly more so) and some of you are just starting out on your journey in cycling. We’re all part of a thriving cycling community, road cyclists, racers, commuters, mountain bikers, gravel grinders, tourers and adventure cyclists, we all have a shared passion for two wheels and the local bike shop is a hub that brings us together. It’s there when we need advice, problems solved, essential spares or a new rain jacket in a hurry when your old one springs a leak.

Summit Cycles proudly serve the local cycling community, we support our local cycle club YCC and have done for many years, we advocate for cycling locally and do all we can to encourage and nurture our local cycling scene. This commitment has made many things possible over the years and your commitment to supporting and using your local bike shop is what has made this possible. It has helped us grow into the store we are today, with a wealth of knowledge gained through supporting all of you on your cycling journeys. Local Bike Shop Day is a great chance to celebrate our shared love of riding bikes (and talking bikes), so come on down to your local bike shop on LBS day, say hi to all our team, those on the shop floor and those behind the scenes, all doing their bit to keep your LBS running as smoothly as a well oiled chain.
